Duralex has made tempered glassware in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, France, since 1945. Rapid controlled cooling places the glass under internal tension, making it substantially more resistant to impact and thermal shock than ordinary glass. The result is non-porous, stackable tableware designed for hot and cold contents, repeated washing and long service life; if it does break, tempering causes it to fragment into many small, less-sharp pieces rather than large dangerous shards.
